Yes I have seen the future. And it looks very good. The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is here and it’s the best looking new car I’ve seen. It features either the 1.8L 4 cylinder Ecotec engine or the 1.4L turbocharged engine. This means it’s a good little engine that gets a nice 138 bhp and125 ft-lb of torque from the 1.8 and 148 from the 1.4. The 1.4 is part of the sport package which comes with optional automatic gearbox with a manual option, and the manual is a 6-speed which is similar to the one out of the new Beetle. And the looks. Oh my God. It is pretty. The hatchbacks have enough room for five in the seats and enough room for a large dog in the boot. Fold the seats down, and you can fit an entire adoption agency. And it’s much the same story for the sedan. You can again fit five people in the seats and maybe two more in the boot. And the interior is actually very good looking. While it does not sport a 5-point racing harness, it does feature racing style buckets. Also, standard you get air con, a CD player, auxiliary plug for your iPod, and power windows, which means it gets a leg up on the car it’s replacing, the Aveo. The instrument cluster is still behind the steering wheel, which is where it belongs, and it may be the most futuristic thing I have ever seen. Chevrolet say it resembles that of a motorbike but the truth is that it resembles that of Starship Enterprise. Even the steering wheel is futuristic. While functions on the steering wheel are common, the buttons on the Sonic are all placed so that you don’t panic when you attempt to set cruise on a curve and instead disengage. The buttons are all molded differently so you know which one you are touching. But, step out of the car and look at the outside and things look even better. While the car’s top speed is only 120, it is built aerodynamically perfect. So it can get 40 mpg at this speed. And the lights look absolutely beautiful. Like the eyes of Keira Knightley. Just perfect. And the price isn’t bad either. The LTZ model with all the power packages, sat nav and sat radio is priced at just £18,000. So everything is good about this car. If I had to say anything bad about it, it looks ridiculous…if your eyes are closed.
